Weight loss is top priority for many people and diabetic patients are typically no exception.  Since obesity is a huge risk factor for developing diabetes and diabetic complications, all patients with type 2 diabetes are advised to lose weight as part of a diabetic management plan.  There are many different exercises to help you lose weight.

Read on to learn three examples of the best exercises to lose weight!

  • Walking:  Walking is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health.  Walking should done at a brisk pace and is best if there are changes in the incline to increase resistance.  You can wear a pedometer every day to track your steps for the day and set daily goals for inspiration.  Research studies have shown that the use of a pedometer can significantly help diabetic patients increase their daily activity.  In addition, you may want to use 1 pound hand weights while you walk to increase the difficulty of this exercise.  Another alternative is to use interval training techniques by alternating walking with jogging to train for a 5K.
  • Swimming:  If you suffer from joint pains then swimming may be a good choice for you.  This activity can be quite high intensity and can help tone your entire body.  It is a good way to burn calories and improve your heart health without stressing your joints.  If you do not enjoy swimming laps consider joining a water aerobics class.
  • Yoga:  Yoga is another excellent choice for diabetic patients who are looking for a low impact routine.  Yoga can be done at home using a home video, instructions from a book or with a group of people in a formal class or in your living room.  Many people enjoy the way that yoga can tone muscle and strengthen core muscles to reduce back pain and improve posture.  In addition, yoga provides its participant with relaxation of the mind, body and soul.  It is truly a way to exercise the entire body!

The key to success is to find something that you can stick to and to find a way to be inspire to continue on, even when you don’t feel like it.  Some general tips to help you find that best exercise for you are:

  • Choose something that you enjoy:  Weight loss through exercise occurs when patients burn more calories than they consume.  Therefore it doesn’t really matter what you choose to do, as long as it gets your heart pumping and burns up those calories it can work for you!  If you choose an activity that you enjoy, chances are that you will be more likely to stick with your exercise program.
  • Pick a work out buddy:  Accountability is important in keeping up with your exercise routine. If you have a friend who will attend your work out sessions you are more likely to attend them.
  • Choose a time of day that works for you:  Many people set unrealistic goals for their work out times.  If you are not a morning person, you may be less likely to get up and exercise every morning.  An evening regimen may work better for you.  Just as if you are always exhausted after work, perhaps planning a lunch time work out will be more reasonable.

There is no best exercise to lose weight but walking, swimming and yoga are among some of the easiest and effective exercise plans!  The key is to find something that inspires you to work out every day and to try your best.  Nothing says that you need to do the same type of exercise every day or that you cannot change to something different in several months.  Try several types of work out classes.  Ask a trainer to show you how to use new equipment. Regardless of what you do, don’t give up!  All you need is 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week for a healthier, thinner you!
