What is Green Tea?

Green tea is a natural substance that has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy for many health problems.

Green tea is made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis.  The leaves are processed immediately before they wilt to prevent oxidation of the and to preserve the many compounds within the tea leaves.  The compounds that have been most studied in green tea include caffeine, polyphenols and catechins.  These chemicals that are found in green tea are thought to work together to help promote weight loss.

Does Green Tea Help You Lose Weight?

Numerous studies have been done to examine the relationship between green tea and weight loss.  Although the some of these scientific studies are not always of the highest quality they have shown some positive effects of green tea that are work further investigation.  Studies have shown that:

  • Green Tea Boosts Metabolism:  One research study showed that consumption of several cups of green tea per day increased the breakdown of fat and accelerated metabolism in study participants.
  • Green Tea Can Stimulate Weight Loss:  Studies done in diabetic laboratory rats have shown that rats who consumed large amounts of green tea had improvements in their blood sugar, cholesterol and also lost weight!
  • Green Tea Catechins Reduce Weight:  Numerous studies have supported the use of green tea catechins to promote weight loss and to reduce fat.  The amounts of green tea consumed were variable in these studies and it is unclear why these compounds promote weight loss.
  • Caffeine in Green Tea Increases the Activity of Catechins:  Green tea also includes up to 4% caffeine and it is believed that this substance interacts with the catechins in green tea to promote accelerated weight loss and fat burning.  This combination of catechins and caffeine promotes the breakdown of fats and helps patients keep weight off!

How Much Green Tea Do I Need For Weight Loss?

Current research studies have not concluded exactly how much green tea it will take to promote weight loss.  Adding any amount of green tea to your diet may be helpful in promoting fat burning, boosting metabolism and maintaining weight loss.  Since green tea is generally safe for most people, it can safely be added to most people’s diet.  It is recommended that people avoid large amounts of green tea and therefore should limit consumption to fewer than five cups of this beverage today.  Excessive amounts of green tea can be fatal as it can cause an overdose of caffeine.  Be sure not to exceed five cups of green tea per day.

Obesity is a growing problem in the United States.  Patients of all ages are at risk for health problems that are associated with being overweight.  These types of problems include chronic pain, hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and more.  Losing weight can help you to reduce the risk of these health problems significantly.  Using dietary changes and exercise are the best ways to lose weight but there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of a natural substance that has few side effects, such as green tea!
