What is Coenzyme Q10?

This substance is found in all creatures that produce energy using oxygen because coenzyme Q is involved in the normal energy production within the mitochondria of the cells of the body.  Co Q10 is found in highest amounts in the tissues that demand significant oxygen use, such as the brain, heart, liver and kidneys.   When there is a coenzyme Q10 deficiency, too little energy is produced at the cellular level.

It is theorized that coenzyme q10 can help improve blood sugar levels at the cellular level and can help reduce the risk of damage by free radicals.  Reduction of free radicals could theoretically lower the risk of diabetic complications, such as neuropathy and retinopathy.  Some studies have demonstrated that this anti-oxidant can improve a1c levels but at this time, there is not enough research to support the use of coenzyme Q10 for treating diabetes.

CoQ10 Benefits For Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease

Current research suggests that coenzyme q10 can have promising effects for patients with Parkinson’s disease.  Studies have shown that patients have a slower decline in function, have some improvement in symptoms, and can perform their daily activities for longer when taking coenzyme q10.  Another potential use for this important supplement is in the use of certain neurological processes that are caused by disruption of normal metabolic processes. 

Coenzyme Q10 Benefits for Migraine Headache

The use of coenzyme Q10 to reduce the frequency of migraine headaches has been supported by clinical studies that have been performed using daily doses of 150 mg to 300 mg of this supplement.

Using Co Q10 for Congestive Heart Failure

Co Q10 has been carefully studied for its use in the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF) and is approved for this use in Japan.  Clinical research has shown that use of this supplement can reduce the symptoms of CHF and the number of hospitalizations for these patients. 

Coenzyme Q10 for Treating High Blood Pressure

This supplement has not been well studied for its use in treating high blood pressure.  Some studies do suggest that blood pressure can be lowered through the use of coenzyme q10.  This supplement may also help repair damage to the blood vessels in patients with hardening of the arteries.

What are the CoQ10 Side Effects?

Coenzyme Q10 should not be used in pregnant women, children or breastfeeding women.  Otherwise there are no known contraindications for taking this medication.  Patients tend to report few side effects when taking this supplement.  Side effects of co q10 include GI upset and medication interactions.  Patients who are taking certain blood thinners should avoid taking this supplement.

Patients should remember that coenzyme Q10 is not a prescription medication.  It is considered a dietary supplement and is not subject to the rigorous quality control processes that medications received from the Food and Drug Administration.  Certain brands have been tested for purity and consistency such as Carlson, CVS pharmacy, Nature Made, Nature’s Bounty, Spring Valley and Vitamin World.
